7+ Unusual Sports Around the World

The world of unusual sports goes way beyond what meets eye. Mainstream sports may be popular worldwide but there are some hidden gems across many countries that people don’t know about.

There are funny but unusual sports related to wife carrying, extreme ironing, and frozen lake winter sports that most of us are hearing about for the first time! It doesn’t hurt to learn about new sports that people were openly practising in some parts of the world.

Also, if you notice some of the sports that we have discussed here, most of them originated in England! It seems that England really is the culprit of all unusual sports. With that being the case, it is only a matter of time before these strange sports become part of online sports betting!

Hoping for the best, in this article, we have listed some of the most unusual winter sports, some strange sports, and some advice about whether you can bet on them on online sports betting websites.

Unusual But Extremely Canadian Winter Sports

Canadian Sports

If you are one of those people who like to indulge in real life unusual sports in Quebec City, then this section has been written just for you! People have been indulging in weird activities to kill time and for entertainment for centuries.

In this section, we have merely dug up some of the common but unusual sports that are practised in colder parts of the world. Look through these extreme sports now and add bucket list!

Dog Sled

In the list of unusual sports is Alaska dog sledding which may not be a normal sport in warmer climates. In this game, one or more sled dogs will pull your sled over ice. In fact, Iditarod is the most famous dog sled that is held in Alaska, USA, and some bookies would let you bet on the winner of the race!

The type of dog you pick for this Quebec City winter sports is crucial. For dog sled, you need lead dogs, swing dogs, point dogs, and wheel dogs.

Wheel dogs are powerful and can help to pull out the sleds when they get stuck in the snow. As you can already guess, Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies are suitable for these roles!

Ice Diving

Ice diving is another adventure sport that Quebec City daredevils will love to engage in! This is a type of penetration diving that occurs under the ice of a frozen lake. Needless to say, this type of unusual sport requires complex equipment and preparation.

Other than for recreational purposes, ice diving is popular for scientific experiments, commercial reasons, and public safety. The diver (men women) has to wear a harness and the other end of it is monitored by another person above the ice level.

Since it is somewhat one of the riskier winter sports, a team needs to lead the expedition. Also, the team needs to be equipped with a line tender. A standby diver and a supervisor are also essential.

Ice Fishing

Yet another usual sport that some people love to thrive in Quebec City, other parts of Canada, and the Northern USA is ice fishing. Fishing competitions to catch the heaviest fish are common. However, responsible fishing rules are enforced for both recreational and competitive purposes.

In fact, if you live in colder climates, then this may even be your weekend hobby! This type of weird sport involves catching fish in frozen water through an opening in the frozen lake.

Some people can go extreme and use specialised equipment for this unusual sport. First, you have to make a hole in the ice with a chisel or ice saw. The whole must be big enough for the fish that you are trying to catch.

Then, you can use the usual fishing gear like fishing rods, colored lures, baits, tip-ups, and spears. Currently, battery-operated sonar units and powerful augers are used to check several holes in a day!

Strangest Sports in the World

Competitive Sleeping

Did you think we were done with extreme sports 101? Not even close! Check out this new list of the strangest and the most unusual sport games you will ever hear about! (Luckily, this list does not involve any wife-carrying sport. And yes, that is a thing in some parts of the world!)

Bog Snorkelling

Bog snorkelling is a weird sport where people overcome 60 yards of trench cut filled with water. The person who can complete the round in the shortest possible time is the winner. Of course, you have to wear traditional snorkelling gear, like flippers, diving masks, and snorkels.

The weird part is that there is no swimming involved at all! This game was first played in 1976 in Wales, United Kingdom. Don’t know where they come up with sports like this, but there are many fans of this unusual sport.

Both men & women can participate in this game, and they must use flipper power alone to get through the 60-yards peat bog twice. At least, you can capture some of the funniest moments of your life!

Cheese Rolling

You are going to freak out more by this real life unusual sport. The cheese rolling event is held annually near Gloucester, England. The official name of this crazy sport is Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake

People who participate in this race have to overcome a 200-yard hill after a double Gloucester cheese that has to roll down the hill as well. Yes, the competitors must chase the cheese down the hill!

Needless to say, as an onlooker, you can witness some of the funniest moments in history. Strange as it may sound, the people of Cooper’s Hill have been doing this for a very long time. In fact, this event dates back to 1826!

Competitive Sleeping

We were not expecting something this ridiculous to end up in our article. Yes, there are championships that revolve around sleeping. As a matter of fact, there are leagues and championships of this ridiculous sport!

All you have to do is sleep continuously for the longest amount of time, and you win the championship! There is a competition in Madrid, Spain, but there is more in other parts of the world.

The World Championship decides the winner after a series of round-robins and match-ups over the course of 2 weeks. But you can’t take any supplements like Melatonin or Chamomile tea.

Underwater Hockey

The last sport listed as strange based on the opinion of the general public is underwater hockey. If ice hockey is a thing, so is underwater hockey. In this sport, 2 teams compete to throw a puck into the opposing team’s goal with the help of a hockey stick.

Do you know what is the hardest part? None of the players is allowed to use breathing devices. So, they have to hold their breath throughout the game! With that aside, this game originated in 1954, and yet again, the English are responsible for coming up with this bizarre game.

Yet the List of Unusual Sports Remains Long

The list of unusual sports is longer than what you may have expected. Here are some other sports that fall in the category of unusual:

Can You Bet on Them?

The truth is that some of the weird and unusual sports listed here may not be available on many sports betting platforms. If you and I have heard of these games for the first time, so have many others.

Therefore, unlike American football and Air Guitar Championships Finland, some of the unusual ones are not on the popular list of bookmakers. However, we will encourage you to check out Betfinal to bet on these funny but bizarre sports.

Regardless, Betfinal has many other incredible winter sports and other sports to offer that are held in Quebec City, Madrid, Perth, Auckland, England, Tokyo, and other places.
