The Washington Capitals moved one win away from their first-ever Stanley Cup Trophy after beating the Las Vegas Golden Knights 6-2 in game four. They now lead the best-of-seven finals series 3-1 going into Thursday’s decider.
The last team from Washington to win a major sporting title was nearly 25 years ago when the Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1992.
45 years and a total of 3700 games later, can the Capital to bring the Stanley Cup home to Washington for the first time, washing away 25 years of misery for sports fans.
Vegas, on the other hand, are thoroughly enjoying their first ever season in the Stanley Cup. They are aiming to become the first team in US sports history to win the title in their first season in existence. Its a sharp contrast of history for the two teams.
Before the season began they were given odds of 500-1 to win the title. However, after three consecutive losses, they are now on the brink of missing out on what could be sports greatest story. Although it’s not over, the last team to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the Stanley Cup were the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942. They really would be writing US sporting history.
