It’s down to the fact that they have a better balance of direct Champions League game against AC Milan (2nd), who are three points behind them with one round to go. “The Rossoneri” will fight for second place and promotion to the best 16 in a direct clash with Red Bull Salzburg (3rd). The Italians need just a draw to progress to the knock-out stages. If they lose – the Austrians will advance further.

Dinamo Zagreb (4th) can only overtake Salzburg and grab the third spot. That would give them a pass to the Europa League. For that to happen, the Croatian champions need to beat Chelsea in London and hope for Milan to win against Salzburg.

If they finish with the same number of points, the French champions, who currently have a better goal difference, will probably come out on top. In their direct encounters, there were two 1:1 draws. 

The competition for third place, giving a pass to the Europa League, also promises to be interesting. Juventus (3rd) and Maccabi Haifa (4th) currently have three points each, and no one has proved better in their direct matches (3:1 and 0:2). 

If they accumulate the same number of points, the goal difference will therefore decide. Juventus is clearly in a better position.
